Who are you, and how are you doing?
Hiya, my name is Karl Russell Vickers, b.1988. I am a UK based artist working on paper with collage and in arrangements with sculpture since graduating in 2011. I earn a living by working in a northern museum installing exhibitions.
What are you doing/working on at this moment?
I have some ideas for new arrangement pieces which I am working on in the background – this includes learning new skills and processes in order to introduce new components and configurations. Collage will remain at the heart of the new work while my practice steers towards a new exciting direction. At the same time, I will continue my ongoing output of collage works on paper and other commissions, as I aim to finish some long-running thematic works from my archive too.
What inspires you the most at this moment?
Many many things.. Colour, technology, layers; Authors such as William Gibson, PK Dick; lots of SCI-FI movies and good TV are always a vital keystone for inspiration, video games like Cyberpunk 2077; and generally having ready access to a lot of artwork, artbooks and exhibitions constantly.
What’s your favourite personal work at this moment?
I suppose I enjoy making some work more than others; it is difficult to pick a personal fave. Over the past year or so, I have made a number of works that surprised me, challenged me and connected some dots in my head, made total sense.. while a lot of work really just plods along they can also be complimented and affirmed by the works that I can be proud of:
Chance would be a fine thing, 2022 (top);
Any of my sketches 2017 – 2024 (bottom);
The long dance;
Pairs and trilogies of mine.
Any future plans/happenings you want to share?
Watch out for the new arrangements I’ve been working on that may pop up sometime soon!
